Stephen Hawking’s research attempted to bridge the divide between theories of physics that describe the very small and the very large. To bridge the divide means to bring two sides closer together or to overcome differences. In physics, there were two independent theories of very, very small things and very, very large things; Dr. Hawking’s research bridged the divide between them by making the connections between them clearer. There is a divide in America between so-called “red states” and “blue states”—states that vote by each major political party. In recent years, nobody has been able to bridge the divide between the two parties.
