When you “cut corners” when you do something, you do not do that thing thoroughly. You do not do a good job. There are allegations that the mine operator Vale cut corners when building the tailings dam that collapsed. If true, it would mean that Vale did not take all the steps, did not do all the work, necessary to build a safe dam. Cutting corners leads to a bad work product.
