A “debut” is the first public appearance or performance of someone or something. It is often used in the context of entertainment, such as the debut of a musician’s first album or a movie actor’s first film. In sports, a debut refers to the first time a player or team participates in a game or competition at a professional or international level.

You can refer to a debut or say someone or something “made his/her/its debut.”

In today’s lesson, you heard that “The Phantom of the Opera” made its debut on Broadway in January 1988. That is when it was first performed on Broadway. But its world debut came two years earlier, in 1986, in London.

In sports, Andrew Volpe made his major-league debut this year with the New York Yankees. He’s a young player who played in his first game in the major leagues, so we say he made his major-league debut.
