Figure eight

A “figure eight” is when something has the shape of the number eight, like a knot. The roads through Yellowstone National Park form a large “figure eight,” or the roads are laid out in the shape of an eight. A chef can mix in egg whites using a figure eight hand movement. This expression is unique to the number eight. You don’t say “figure nine” if something resembles the shape of a nine.
