In today’s episode, I reflected back on the movie Roma. I mentioned that it won the Best Picture award at the Golden Globes. This means that Roma is the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars. When someone or something is a front-runner, that person or thing is expected to win. He/she/it is seen as being in the lead. The New England Patriots are often the front-runners in American football: they usually are so good that everyone expects them to win the Super Bowl. In an election campaign, there is often an early front-runner: the person who, early on, is expected to win. But sometimes that person wins, and sometimes he or she loses. Being a front-runner is no guarantee of a win. Chicago is about to elect a new mayor next month; there is no clear front-runner because the race is very tight.
