When a company goes public, it converts from being a private company to being a public company, where small investors can buy and sell shares in the stock market. Spotify is preparing to go public this month. Right now, it’s a private company, but it will be selling ownership shares on the New York Stock Exchange after it goes public. Snapchat went public about a year ago. Companies like Dropbox, Airbnb, and Uber may go public in 2018.
