A “hands-off” approach is a passive approach to something; it is when someone does not actively manage a situation. Facebook and social media companies took a “hands-off” approach to the content on their platforms, saying they were only the technology and couldn’t be held responsible for what is published on them. But now, they need to be more “hands-on” and actively manage situations, as the platforms have grown and the public calls for more action. You might have had a very “hands-on” boss—one that consistently monitors your work closely. A “hands-off” boss lets you do what you want (and holds you accountable).
