To “be in the minority” on an issue or a topic is to be different from most people. For example, someone under 30 who doesn’t have a personal Instagram account is “in the minority” since most other people that age have Instagram.

“In the minority” is specific to a situation, opinion, or trait. For example, someone who works at Starbucks but doesn’t like coffee is “in the minority” on that one issue, even if they share many other characteristics with coworkers and customers.
