Kidding yourself

When someone is kidding, it means they are joking. But if you’re kidding yourself, it means you are telling yourself a lie. If you think that having a drink a day is healthy, you’re just kidding yourself: you’re telling yourself a lie to make yourself feel better about having your evening cocktail.
