When you talk about a place, the “locals” are the people who live there. This term is usually used as the opposite of tourists. For example, snowmobiling is popular with tourists. They come from warm-weather places to take a snowmobile on the cold, snowy paths. But some people live in those snowy towns all year round. The locals also use the snowmobile paths to get around.
In big tourist destinations, the locals are often frustrated by the tourists. Meanwhile, the tourists try to experience a town “like the locals” by going to places they think are “popular with locals” to get a more authentic experience.
