Something is made up if it’s invented. There’s a drug called Xeljanz. What does Xeljanz mean? It means nothing: it’s a made-up word. The drug company invented the word.

A fraudulent business may make a presentation to investors, showing how profitable the business is. But the company executives might have made up the key facts in the presentation. Instead of being real, they were invented “facts” that the executives made up to conceal their fraud.
