A “passerby” is someone who is coincidentally present for an event, usually walking by. For example, political candidates might wait outside a subway station and shake hands with passers-by (the plural of passerby). After a car accident, a police officer might interview a passerby to understand who was at fault. In this case, the police officer would interview someone who coincidentally was walking near the scene of the accident.
