“Short lived” is an expression used to describe a situation that was temporary. It’s most often used when reflecting back on a situation that turned out to be temporary. In today’s lesson, you learned that the chess champion Gary Kasparov defeated IBM’s chess computer, Deep Blue, in a six-game competition in 1996. This victory was interpreted as a victory of “man over machine.”

But the victory was short lived. That’s because just one year later, Deep Blue beat Kasparov. Therefore, man’s victory over machine in chess was temporary: it lasted only one year.

In 2015, drug kingpin “El Chapo” escaped from prison for the second time. But his freedom was short lived. He was captured the next year and he remains behind bars.
