A spat is a petty argument or quarrel. The chief architect and the leader of the Notre-Dame restoration are in a public “spat,” or public argument, over the cathedral’s spire reconstruction. The architect wants to build an exact replica of the original spire, while the restoration leader wants to build a more contemporary spire. Siblings might have a “spat” about who should do the dishes.
