When talking about a portion of a road (usually a major roadway), you can use the phrase “stretch of highway.” For example, “This stretch of highway is dangerous because animals frequently try to cross the road.”
In today’s main lesson, you heard that Rio Tinto lost a tiny radioactive capsule while they were transporting equipment in Western Australia. Because they didn’t know where the capsule fell off, they had to search a 1,400-kilometer stretch of highway. This means, they had to search a portion of the road that extended for 1,400 kilometers.
In America, it’s common for student groups, churches, or other groups to “adopt” a stretch of highway. They agree to clean up trash for a portion of a highway close to where they live.
