What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a new artificial intelligence chatbot introduced by OpenAI in November 2022. In its first few months, ChatGPT reached over 100 million users. Now, after six months in use, individuals, students, and businesses have all found exciting and innovative new uses for ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is a Large Language Model (LLM) that uses deep learning to analyze a vast library of written material. ChatGPT is updated with information through 2021, and you can also provide your own information to the model.

How does ChatGPT work?

It’s simple: You just create a new free account with OpenAI and start chatting.

You can ask ChatGPT about people, places, and historical events. You can ask it to draft an e-mail for you, or even write a blog post*.

But there’s a lot more to ChatGPT than simply chatting in a text box. In the course, we’ll show you five great ways to use ChatGPT in your own life.

Why learn ChatGPT with Plain English?

There are many videos and tutorials that can help you learn ChatGPT. You might not even need any help at all. HOWEVER!

However, you are learning English and it might be a little harder for you to learn about how to interact with this tool in your second language.

Sure, terms like: “What is the capital of Canada?” are easy to formulate.

But to understand how to use the tool, you need to know what to ask it. And since ChatGPT gives its best results in English, you should learn it in English.

You already know and love Plain English, and you know all our content is friendly and easy to understand.

What you’ll get from the challenge

We know your time is valuable. So we wanted to make this challenge as useful as possible. And there are three outcomes you’re guaranteed to get from this free challenge. Here they are:

Get comfortable

You will be comfortable using ChatGPT. If you haven’t used it yet, or if you’ve just tried it a few times, you might not be comfortable yet. The 5 days of activities guarantee that you’ll be comfortable using it, so that you can go back to it later in your daily or business life.

Our challenge takes you step-by-step through the prompts and activities. By the end of the fifth day, you’ll feel like a ChatGPT pro! You might even be teaching your friends.

Get the most out of ChatGPT

You’ll learn how to get the most out of ChatGPT. A lot of people just ask silly questions. That’s okay, but ChatGPT is more than just entertainment. You’ll learn how to use ChatGPT effectively. What types of prompts should you ask? What is ChatGPT good for? What is it not good for? By the end of the challenge, you’ll see with your own eyes what it’s good for and where its limitations lie.

Generate your own ideas

You’ll have lots of great ideas for the future. We’ve packaged five days of activities — one activity per day. As you do the activities, you’ll have ideas for even more ways to use ChatGPT.

And because you’re comfortable using it, you’ll be able to put those ideas into practice after the challenge is over.

About the 5-day Plain English ChatGPT Challenge

The Challenge is a short course that will help you learn how to use ChatGPT. It’s specifically made for English learners, but it’s not about learning English.

  • If you’ve never used ChatGPT, we’ll send you instructions on how to sign up; it’s easy.
  • If you have used ChatGPT before, you’ll still learn a lot in this course (and have fun).

How it works

The course features videos and activities.

  • The videos teach you a little about ChatGPT and introduce each day’s activity.
  • The activity is a worksheet and instructions for what to do in ChatGPT.

After you complete each activity, you’ll send us part of the ChatGPT conversation.

WhatsApp group

You’ll also get an invitation to a private WhatsApp group made up of Plain English listeners completing the challenge.

In the WhatsApp group, we’ll talk about each day’s activities, what we learned, what we liked, and what we didn’t like. It’s a great way to interact in English with other like-minded people from around the world.

And we’ll all be doing the activities together, so we’ll really have a sense of community. And yes, I (Jeff) will be in the WhatsApp group every day.

What you get for completing the Challenge

We’re calling it a “challenge” because it’s five days of activities. If you complete all five days of the activities, we’ll send you a free social media completion badge that proves you’re a ChatGPT user. It’s perfect for sharing on social media!

When & where

The challenge starts June 5, 2023 and runs for five days.

The videos and activities will be in a special section of PlainEnglish.com. You’ll get a link to each day’s activity in your e-mail, so make sure to check your inbox in the next few days.
