To be "en route" means to be on the way to or from somewhere.

When the helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and seven other passengers crashed, it was on its way, or “en route,” from the Bryant home to a youth sports facility. In that example, an object – the helicopter – is en route, but people can also be en route. You could also say that Kobe Bryant and the other passengers were en route to the youth sports facility.
