DefinitionYour turn
When a tragedy or a bad situation does not happen—but only just barely—you say that situation is a close call. For example, if you’re driving on a highway and another car almost hits you, you can say it was a “close call”: you almost had an accident, but thankfully you did not. Chile was expecting its trial at the UN court to be a close call, but they actually won a convincing victory. It wasn’t a close call, since a large majority of the UN judges sided with them.
