Now that trading individual stocks and funds is free at many discount brokerage firms (at least in the US), it’s easier for investors to create a “balanced portfolio.” A balanced portfolio is a group of investments that has a little bit of many types of things. Examples include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, commodities, real estate, and other types of investments. By having a balanced portfolio, if one type of investment does badly, the others can save you from losing too much money.
