To “chow down” is to eat a meal enthusiastically or eagerly. You would typically use this phrase when you’re really hungry and you’re about to start eating a large, delicious meal.
If you’ve been away from home for a few weeks on vacation, you might come home and “chow down” on your favorite meals. You’d be enthusiastic because you were away from your favorite foods for a while.
If you prepare a large meal, you might say “chow down” to others as a way of encouraging them to eat.
Be careful leaving a bag of trash on the street overnight, at least in the city. There’s a good chance rats could break in and chow down on your food scraps.
