The United States spans a continent and has two main coasts: the east coast (New York/Washington/Boston) and the west coast (Los Angeles/San Francisco/Seattle).

Sure, the U.S. has a coast on the Gulf of Mexico and then there’s Hawaii and Alaska. But a general shorthand to say something covers the whole country, or spans the country from east to west, is to say “coast to coast.”

For example, in today’s lesson, we said that State Fairs are popular “from coast to coast.” That’s a short way of saying that State Fairs are popular in the entire country.

Here’s another example: From coast to coast, Americans are experiencing extreme weather this summer. That means that people on the west coast, on the east coast, and many places in between are experiencing extreme weather.
