Eyes and ears

To have “eyes and ears” on something means to be attentive to it, or watching and listening to it very closely. Part of the Communist Party’s success in maintaining power and social order comes from this pyramid structure; it allows the party to have “eyes and ears” in every part of society. The pyramid structure allows the Communist Party to closely monitor every part of society. The journalists were all “eyes and ears” at the press conference.
