DefinitionYour turn

Something is far-flung if it’s spread out over a wide geographic area. This is typically used with networks or systems that have many parts.

For example, a company’s supply chain is the group of companies that provide inputs to its final products. A car company’s supply chain includes companies that make the electronics, the seats, the glass, the engine components, and more. A company’s supply chain is “far-flung” if there are many suppliers in many different parts of the world.

“Our family is a little far-flung” means that you have many family members who live in many different places in the country or the world.

Far-flung can also mean “distant” or “a long way away.” For example, you can say: “I’m planning some travel to far-flung destinations this year” if you’re planning to visit the beaches of Thailand, the mountains of Peru, and the savannahs of Africa.
