DefinitionYour turn

“For short” is a way of indicating that you have just given an abbreviation or a nickname.

You generally state the full name, followed by the abbreviation or nickname and “for short” to indicate what you have done. The formula goes like this: Full name + “or” + Nickname + “for short.”

In today’s lesson, you heard that fish and chips are sold at fish and chip shops, or “chippies” for short. That means that you can call these shops “fish and chip shops” if you want. But it’s also common to abbreviate it as “chippies.”

You can also use this with people. For example, Jeffrey (or Jeff, for short) has been creating Plain English episodes since 2017. Julio (or JR, for short) has produced every single one of them.
