Use “go down” as a device when describing a surprising series of events. This is used to introduce a story or a description about how an incident or situation happened.

In today’s story about the wine thief in California, I started a paragraph this way: “Here’s how it went down.” And then I described exactly how the theft happened. This is an informal way of saying, “Let me tell you what happened” or “Here is the sequence of events.”

Here’s another example. Imagine you’re telling a friend about the result of an exciting football game. Your friend missed the ending. He might ask you, “How did it go down?” And you might reply. “It was so exciting. Here’s how it went down:…” and then you would explain the ending.
