“Hubris” is a word to describe excessive confidence, arrogance, and pride. This is often used when a person or organization does not show the appropriate level of humility in a situation.
OceanGate was the company behind the Titan submersible that imploded, killing the CEO and four passengers. The company refused to submit its designs to independent inspection and certification. The CEO repeatedly dismissed warnings as “crying” and excessive. He fired an employee who warned about safety. He told customers that going to the Titanic in his ship was “way safer” than SCUBA diving or riding in a helicopter. He laughed and joked as he gave television interviews about how he used regular consumer products in his deep-sea submersible.
The company displayed hubris in its marketing and public statements. Its attitude was one of overconfidence, lack of humility, arrogance, and excessive pride.
