They say the only constant in life is change. And sometimes things change permanently. After a permanent change, you can describe the new situation as “the new normal.”

This is because the new situation doesn’t seem normal based on your prior experience. But because the change is permanent–because what was “normal” before is not coming back–you can call the new situation the “new normal.”

Iceland is a geologically unique area. But even by its standards, it has seen a lot of volcanic eruptions in recent years. This may be the new normal. That’s because the volcanoes are thought to go through decades of activity, followed by centuries of inactivity.

Scientists think the period of inactivity has recently concluded. That means the “new normal” — or the way things will be in the future — is to have a lot of volcanic eruptions. Yikes!
