A match is a competition between two competitors. A rematch is a competition that features the same competitors as a previous competition.

If there’s one thing about politics that Americans can agree on, it’s this: they don’t want a rematch. The last election was between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. And guess what: the next election is likely to be a rematch. Biden and Trump are likely to be the nominees of the two major parties again in 2024.

Outside of politics, you might have played a competitive game of chess or tennis with a friend. If you want to play another game, you can say, “Rematch?” That’s a way of asking if your friend wants to play again.

This happens with team sports, too. Last year’s baseball World Series was between the Astros and Phillies. Houston Astros were hoping for a rematch because they lost last year.
