Who’s the favorite?

You might think that question means, “who do we like the best?” But in the context of a competition, “the favorite” is the one that is predicted to win. It’s not about who you like.

In the Women’s World Cup, the U.S. was the favorite to win the tournament. That means, when the tournament started, the team believed to have the best chance to win was the U.S. (They didn’t win after all.)

In 2024, Mexico will elect a new president. Two women represent the top two parties. At this point, Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, is the favorite. That doesn’t mean she’s my preference; it just means she is most likely to win, based on opinion polls at this time.

The favorite can change at any time before the competition.
